About Trees That Count | Te Rahi o Tāne Trust
With a history spanning more than 35 years, Trees That Count is an environmental not-for-profit, dedicated to supporting native forest restoration throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. With the largest network of credible nature projects in the motu, Trees That Count connects funding for native trees with on-the-ground restoration efforts. To date, businesses and individuals have enabled the planting of nearly three million trees, accelerating positive outcomes for our climate, biodiversity and communities – from enhanced carbon sinks to cleaner waterways and healthier habitats for taonga species.

Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury
One of the projects we’ve supported through Trees That Count is the Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust.
This programme is creating “stepping stones” of native habitat across the Selwyn District, building a greenway from the Canterbury Foothills to Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere. Since 2009, over 250,000 native seedlings have been planted at more than 145 sites, covering 52 hectares.
Shakespear Regional Park Community Planting Programme.
One of the projects we’ve recently supported through Trees That Count is the Shakespear Regional Park Community Planting Programme.
This programme is restoring native habitats across the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, creating safe spaces for kiwi, tīeke, toutouwai and more. Since 2010, pest‑proof fencing, wetland regeneration, and thousands of native trees have helped transform the park into New Zealand’s first open sanctuary.
